God is love. Everything He does (and does not do) is out of radical, unchanging, earth-shattering love. A love that knows no end. He loves us the same every single day, despite your actions or your thought or your feelings in any particular moment or day. He even gave us His only Son while we were still sinners – that is how much, and how constantly, He loves us.
When you feel blessed and close to God, you see Him in everything. In every piece of “good luck” that comes your way, every sunset, every smile, even in the way the leaves fall from a tree. When it is going well, you truly see and feel God in everything, for you are so sure and aware of His love for you and his all-consuming presence in your heart.
But once you feel things are going downhill, your prayers aren’t being answered and life does not look like you want it to look, you wonder: “Lord, why have You forsaken me?”
But darling, He hasn’t.
With the exact same heart of love that you so intensely experienced in the good times, He sends challenges, disappointments and hardships our way. With the same mercy and kindness, He puts us through these things so that we can grow and draw closer to Him, seeking Him more desperately – He is waiting to be found! He makes us feel weak, so that we could be made stronger through Him (2 Corinthians 12:9) and be led back into his loving embrace.
God never changes (Hebrews 13:8) and He leads us on our path to Him with everything He does.
Knowing that God blesses and spoils, teaches and disciplines us with the same heart, we can accept our lows with the same smile and thankful heart as we do our highs. We need to remind ourselves that God’s ways are higher than our own (Isaiah 55:9) and that His sovereign plan will rarely be made known to us. We can know, with every fibre in our being, that God makes all things work together for our good (Romans 8:28). We won’t be able to see it right away, but we must know it to be true.
So, embrace hardships. Take them on with courage and confidence, knowing that this challenge can bring you closer to God – the Creator of Heaven and Earth, the Author of Love.
When God feels far away, remind your soul that He never is. He is in you, next to you and all around you (Psalm 139:5) . He carefully prepares your path for you and holds your hand every step of the way.
