Firstly, Woodstock cave is not in Woodstock – It’s halfway up Devil’s Peak mountain and it’s the cave you see from De Waal Drive. From the cave, you overlook Woodstock and Salt River.
One Saturday morning, 2 weeks ago, was my very first time at Devil’s Peak – yes, I am still exploring our beautiful Mother City.
So how do you get there?
You drive the way you would drive to get to the cable car on Table Mountain. You can park at one of those parking lots along Tafelberg Road. Park the car, get your bags and get ready to walk. The further you park, the less you’ll walk. Walk all along that tarred road until you reach a gravel road.
We walked along the gravel road until we reached this gate. Don’t go through the gate, walk up the path to the right of the gate, the way Amy them are doing below:
It is a relatively easy walk up (if you’re used to Lion’s Head). Walk along the path and eventually you’ll see this signpost. Follow the path to the left to “Devil’s Peak Woodstock Cave” :
Walk, walk, stop to take in the view and walk some more…
We got to stage where it looked like a fork in the path, 1 path going up and one going down… Take the path going down:
Soon, you’ll be able to see the cave from below. There are a few rocks to climb but nothing hectic, take some pictures and enjoy your goodies at the top (hopefully you remembered to pack them). It took us about 40 minutes to get to the top.
P.S: Don’t be surprised if you see some people living up there, some graffiti and church services being held.
P.P.S: There are no dustbins, take a plastic bag for your own dirt and don’t be shy to take some dirt down with you #gogreen #lesslitter
